BYD to Nigeria: the Song Plus DM-i pays duty, a battery BYD does not

A 2022 Song Plus DM-i lands in Lagos at about $28,656 because plug-in hybrids miss Nigeria's EV exemption, which needs 200 km of electric range. A battery BYD on the same CIF saves about $5,984.

A 2022 Song Plus DM-i 110km lands in Lagos at about $28,656 — 1.64× FOB — and it pays full duty. The DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with 110 km of electric range, and Nigeria's exemption requires 200 km or more. A battery-electric BYD on the same CIF value would save roughly $5,984 in import duty, surcharge and VAT. If the buyer's real goal is a BYD, the model choice matters more than the price negotiation.

What qualifies for the EV exemption, exactly

Nigeria exempts battery-electric vehicles and extended-range electric vehicles with at least 200 km of electric-only range from import duty and VAT, under the Presidential Gas for Growth Initiative. Three exclusions decide most cases:

  • Hybrids do not qualify. A conventional hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid whose electric range is short, is assessed as a combustion car — full duty, full VAT.
  • Units valued at $100,000 or more are excluded. The exemption is aimed at volume cars, not at luxury imports.
  • The certificate must be obtained before shipment. It is not granted at the port on arrival, and a unit that arrives without it is assessed at the full rate.

The Song Plus DM-i at 110 km sits below the 200 km line. The Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal and e6 are battery-electric and do qualify, provided the certificate is in hand before the vessel sails.

Side by side on the same CIF

LineSong Plus DM-i, PHEV 110 kmAtto 3, battery-electric
Import duty, 20% of CIF$3,919$0
NAC levy, 5% of CIF$980$980
Surcharge, 7% of duty$274$0
ECOWAS ETLS, 0.5% of CIF$98$98
FOB levy, 4% of FOB$700$700
Green Tax$0, engine under 2,000cc$0, exempt
VAT, 7.5%$1,791$0
Landed in Lagos$28,656$22,672

The gap is not marginal. On a CIF of $19,594 the exemption is worth about $5,984 — more than the freight, more than the port charges, and roughly a third of the FOB price. Surcharge drops out with the duty because it is calculated on the duty amount: when duty is zero, the surcharge on it is zero too.

The charging reality, stated plainly

Nigeria had roughly 48 public charging points by late 2025, concentrated in Lagos and Abuja, on a grid that supplies about 4,000 MW to more than 200 million people. A battery-electric car is a Lagos-and-Abuja proposition today, charged at home or at a business with generator backup. The DM-i exists precisely because that infrastructure is thin — it burns petrol when the battery is empty — and that is exactly why it does not get the exemption.

Read the two facts together before deciding. The DM-i is the easier car to live with and the more expensive car to import; the Atto 3 is the cheaper import and the harder car to run outside Lagos. We will quote either, and we will not pretend the tax break applies to the one it does not.

Frequently asked

Is BYD duty-free in Nigeria?

Only battery-electric models. The Song Plus DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with 110 km of electric range and does not meet the 200 km threshold, so it pays full duty and VAT.

How much does a Song Plus DM-i land at in Lagos?

About $28,656 for a 2022 110 km unit, including export handling, freight, duty, levies, VAT and port charges.

What is the cheapest legal way to import a BYD into Nigeria?

A battery-electric model — Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal or e6 — with the exemption certificate obtained before the vessel departs.

Do I need the exemption certificate before shipping?

Yes. It is issued under the Presidential Gas for Growth Initiative and must be in hand before departure, or the unit is assessed at the full rate on arrival.

Are electric cars exempt from Green Tax?

Yes, along with mass-transit buses and locally assembled vehicles. The DM-i is exempt from Green Tax anyway because its engine is under 2,000cc.

Does a plug-in hybrid count as an electric vehicle for Nigerian customs?

No. Only battery-electric and extended-range electric vehicles with at least 200 km of electric-only range qualify. A plug-in hybrid is assessed as a combustion car.

Where these figures come from

  • Nigeria Customs Service, guidelines on fiscal incentives under the Presidential Gas for Growth Initiative — battery-electric and extended-range vehicles with 200 km or more of electric range exempt from import duty and VAT; hybrids and units valued at $100,000 or more excluded.
  • Nigeria Customs Service, 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures, effective 1 July 2026.
  • SON and NADDC VehCAP — pre-shipment certification mandatory from 31 March 2026.
The battery-electric comparison uses the same CIF, the same freight and the same port charges — only the duty, surcharge and VAT lines change. A real Atto 3 quote would carry a different FOB, so treat $22,672 as the like-for-like figure rather than as a price for that car.
