Top 10 used car models for Nigeria

The ten models West African dealers ask for most, ranked for the Nigerian market — what each one is good at, who it suits, and roughly what it costs to land.

Reference data as of 2026-10-26

1

Toyota Corolla

Ride-hailing, family use, a first car

USD 9,500 – 14,000

Parts on every street, the lowest running cost of anything on this list, and the deepest resale market in the country. Below 2,000cc, so it lands in the cheapest tax band.

2

Toyota Hilux

Fleet, construction, agriculture, NGO and security

USD 17,000 – 26,000

The workhorse. Construction, agriculture, NGO and security fleets all buy it, and the diesel 4x4 double cab is the version that moves. Lands above 2,000cc, so budget the 2% Green Tax.

3

Toyota Camry

Families and long-distance drivers

USD 12,000 – 18,000

Where the Corolla is the practical choice, the Camry is the executive one. Families and long-distance drivers buy it for the space and the ride, on an established parts network.

4

Honda Civic

Commuters and ride-hailing drivers

USD 9,500 – 14,500

The strongest alternative to a Corolla, and the first choice for a commuter who wants more to drive. Check the exact year and specification, because equipment differs between markets.

5

Nissan X-Trail

Families who want an SUV without the SUV tax

USD 9,000 – 14,000

A compact SUV that sits below the 2,000cc line in most trims, so it carries SUV space without carrying the SUV tax. Strong resale with families who want a higher driving position.

6

Toyota Hiace

Minibus, church and school-run operators

USD 18,000 – 28,000

The commercial transport staple: minibuses, church and school runs, corporate shuttles. The high-roof left-hand-drive version is the configuration that is asked for by name.

7

Hyundai Tucson

First-time SUV buyers

USD 9,500 – 15,000

Modern compact-SUV comfort at a price below the Japanese equivalents, with a parts network that is growing fast in Lagos. A common choice for a first SUV.

8

Toyota Fortuner

SUV buyers who need 4x4

USD 18,000 – 27,000

Land Cruiser capability without Land Cruiser money. Sits below the 4,000cc Green Tax band in most versions, which is why it beats a Prado on landed cost.

9

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Government, oil and gas, premium buyers

USD 15,000 – 26,000

The premium and fleet anchor: government procurement, oil and gas fleets, and buyers who want the badge. The highest landed cost on this list and the highest margin per unit.

10

Isuzu D-Max

Buyers whose business depends on the vehicle

USD 11,000 – 18,000

The value alternative to a Hilux. It does the same job for less, which is the argument for a buyer whose business depends on the vehicle rather than on the badge.

How this list is ranked

We publish the basis so you can judge it yourself — a ranking you cannot check is just an opinion.

The ranking crosses two sources: published sales and parc data for Nigeria, and the models West African dealers actually ask us for. Where the two pull apart, dealer demand wins — dealers are buying for a forecourt, and their repeat orders are the closest thing to a live read on what moves. The order is a market view, not a stock list: it tells you what sells, and we source to order against it.

The price range on each card is the indicative Chinese used-market range for an export-grade unit of 4 to 7 years old, FOB Nansha. It is a planning reference, not a quote: freight, insurance and Nigerian duties are not included, and the price of a specific car is written after inspection.

Questions

What buyers ask about this list

Short answers with the numbers attached.

Which is the most popular used car to import into Nigeria?

The Toyota Corolla, by a wide margin. It has the deepest parts network in the country, the lowest running cost of the popular models and the fastest resale. Most Nigerian used-car dealers run Corolla as their volume line, because the buyer for a clean example is always there.

Is this ranking based on what you have in stock?

No. The ranking is about demand, not inventory. It comes from published Nigerian sales and parc data, crossed with the models West African dealers actually ask us for. We source to order: tell us the model, year range, trim and quantity, and we find the car in China and quote it in writing. A model we do not hold today is a model we go and find — that is the service, not a gap in it.

Which of these is the cheapest to import after tax?

A small-displacement Toyota Corolla. Green Tax is charged from 2,000cc, so a 1.6-litre engine pays none of it and the whole tax stack lands at about 39.7% of CIF. A 2020 Corolla at USD 9,800 FOB lands at roughly 1.5 times its FOB price, against 1.6 times for a 2021 Hilux and 1.6 times for a 2018 Prado.

Which of these is the best for profit?

It depends on which business you are running. For volume: the Corolla and Honda Civic — cheap to buy, cheap to run, fast to sell. For margin per unit: the Land Cruiser Prado, Fortuner and Hiace. The mistake is mixing both in one container without deciding which one you are in.

Can I buy just one unit of these models?

Yes. Our minimum order is one unit, and 2 to 4 units can share a container, which spreads the freight. Tell us the model, year range, trim and quantity, and we come back with the exact cars available in China and a written FOB price for each.
