What ten cars actually cost to land in Lagos

Corolla, Hilux, Camry, Prado and six more: FOB range, engine band, every duty line and the landed price in Lagos for each. The cheapest car carries the highest multiplier — here is the arithmetic.

2026-10-28HESON MOTORS← All guides

Pick a car out of this list and its price in Lagos is on the table below, line by line: FOB, freight, insurance, the eight tax lines and the port costs. Multipliers run from 1.56 to 1.83 times the FOB price, and the counter-intuitive part is which end each one sits at — the cheapest car here carries the highest multiplier, and the most expensive carries the lowest.

The ten, with the landed price

Every figure below is computed, not quoted. FOB is the reference range on each model's own page — an export-grade unit, four to seven years old, in the Chinese used market. Landed adds export handling (USD 500), ocean freight to Lagos (USD 1,400), marine insurance at 1%, the 2026 tax stack, and USD 1,300 of port charges, SONCAP, clearing and inland delivery.

Engine size is the one published on each model's own page, not the trim a particular buyer might choose — a Corolla is listed at 1.2 litres and a Camry at 2.0, and the band follows that figure. Two rows can therefore carry identical numbers: the Camry and the RAV4 sit in the same reference range and the same engine band, so the arithmetic lands in the same place. That is the table being honest, not the table being wrong. Each model name has its own page under the model list with the full specification sheet, the reference range this table is built from, and the units of that model we currently hold.

Read the last column first. It is the only number that tells you what a container load actually costs to put on the ground, and it is not constant across the list — a Corolla at the bottom of its range multiplies by 1.83, an RX350 at the top of its range multiplies by 1.56. Same country, same tax code, same shipping line, same week.

Why the cheaper car is the more expensive multiplier

Three of the costs on the way in do not scale with the price of the car. Export handling, ocean freight and the port-and-clearing block are close to fixed per unit — together about USD 3,200 whichever car you put in the container. On a 9,500 car that is 34 percent of the FOB price before a single duty is charged. On a 32,000 car it is 10 percent.

Everything downstream inherits that: the CIF value is higher than the car is worth by a bigger percentage, and every percentage-of-CIF charge scales off the inflated base. A cheap car is not a cheap import. It is a cheap car with an expensive journey attached to it.

The practical consequence for a dealer is that the thin-margin volume business and the high-margin large-car business do not have the same cost structure, and pricing them off the same multiplier will lose money on one of them. If you are building a price list for your forecourt, build it per model, not by applying 1.6 across the board.

The 2,000cc line is worth two points of CIF

Green Tax starts at 2,000cc: nothing below it, 2% of CIF from 2,000 to 3,999cc, 4% at 4,000cc and above. On this list the line falls between an Isuzu D-Max at 1,900cc and a Hilux at 2,800cc, and on those two cars it is worth USD 382 on the Hilux and nothing at all on the D-Max — for two vehicles sold into the same market for the same work.

That is not an argument for small engines. A 1.9L pickup and a 2.8L pickup are not the same vehicle and a buyer who needs the torque will not be moved by USD 382. It is an argument for knowing which band a model sits in before you quote, because the difference is real money and it lands on your margin, not the customer's.

The full band table, including which units in our catalogue fall where, is on the Green Tax page.

Two things will change these numbers after you read them

Customs does not value the car at what you paid. Nigeria Customs runs a VIN-based reference database and assesses against its own figure, which in our experience runs 20 to 50 percent above the invoice. Every percentage-of-CIF charge is applied to the assessed value, not to your FOB price. If your unit is assessed 30 percent high, add roughly a third to the tax column — not to the whole landed price, but to the part of it that the tax represents, which on these cars is about 40 percent of CIF.

The naira does not hold still. Every number on this page is in dollars, which is the only way to compare two shipments months apart. Your customer is buying in naira, so the price he sees moves with the rate even when nothing about the car has changed. Quote in dollars, convert on the day, and say which day.

What this page is not

It is not a quotation, and it is not a price list. The FOB figures are ranges for an export-grade unit of that model in the Chinese used market — the actual car you buy is a specific VIN with a specific mileage and a specific service history, and it is quoted in writing after inspection. The range is what you plan with. The quotation is what you book with.

Two questions sit on either side of this page. If you have not decided where the car enters Nigeria, the two routes are compared here — and the answer is not the one the trade press gives. If you are choosing between supply countries, China and America are set side by side here, on Nigeria's own trade statistics.

One figure on this page is not settled, and we would rather flag it than smooth it over: the 7% surcharge is charged on the duty amount by some sources and on duty plus the NAC levy by others, and the VAT base is described as excluding Green Tax by some and including it by others. On these cars the two readings differ by about USD 110 in total, which is inside the rounding of a range like this one — but if you are reconciling to the dollar against a real bill of entry, that is where the gap will be.

How much does it cost to land a Toyota Corolla in Nigeria?

A Corolla at the bottom of our reference range — USD 9,500 FOB Nansha — lands in Lagos at about USD 17,345. At the top of the range, USD 14,000 FOB, it lands at about USD 23,707. The multiplier is 1.83 to 1.69, the highest on our ten-model list, because the fixed costs of export handling, freight and port charges weigh proportionally more on a cheaper car.

How much is a Toyota Hilux in Nigeria?

A used Hilux 2.8D double cab four-wheel drive, four to seven years old, runs USD 17,000 to 26,000 FOB Nansha, which lands in Lagos at about USD 28,330 to 41,240. It sits in the 2,000 to 3,999cc band, so it pays 2% Green Tax on CIF — about USD 382 on the cheaper of the two — on top of the standard duty, levy, FOB levy, surcharge, ETLS and VAT.

What is the cheapest car to import into Nigeria?

On price alone, the cheapest unit on this list is a Corolla at about USD 17,345 landed, but it is not the cheapest to import in proportion — it carries the highest multiplier here at 1.83 times FOB, against 1.56 for a large SUV at the top of its range. If your question is cost per car, buy small. If your question is cost per dollar of car, buy larger.

Is it cheaper to import a car to Nigeria than to buy one locally?

We can answer the import side precisely and we cannot answer the local side, so we will not pretend to. This page gives you the full landed cost of a Chinese unit in Lagos, itemised. What the same car fetches on a Lagos forecourt depends on condition, paperwork and the week, and we do not hold a local retail dataset — for that, look at the listings on Jiji or Cars45 and compare like for like. Anyone who quotes you both sides is guessing at one of them.

Does engine size change the price of importing a car to Nigeria?

Yes, by 2 to 4 percent of CIF. Green Tax adds nothing below 2,000cc, 2% from 2,000 to 3,999cc and 4% from 4,000cc. On a USD 17,000 FOB pickup that is roughly USD 382, and it is charged on CIF rather than on the car price, so the freight is taxed too.

Why does a cheap car have a higher multiplier than an expensive one?

Because about USD 3,200 of the cost does not scale with the car: export handling, ocean freight and the port, certification and clearing block are near-fixed per unit. On a 9,500 car that is 34% of the FOB price before duty; on a 32,000 car it is 10%. Every percentage-of-CIF charge then works off the inflated base.

Send the model, the year range and the port you clear at. We come back with the units that fit, a written FOB price per unit, and the landed cost to Lagos calculated on that exact car — not on a range.
