Best cars to import to Nigeria

The ten models that move fastest in Nigeria, and why: parts availability, running cost, resale and the tax band each one lands in. With landed-cost multipliers and what we can actually source.

2026-10-26HESON MOTORS← All guides

Toyota Corolla, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Nissan X-Trail, Toyota Hiace, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Isuzu D-Max. The reason these ten and not the others is not fashion — it is parts on every street in Lagos, fuel that does not bankrupt a daily driver, and the fact that a used Toyota or Honda in Nigeria is easier to sell than anything else you can put on the forecourt.

How this list is put together

Three things decide whether a model sells in Nigeria, and all three are checkable rather than a matter of opinion:

  • Parts availability. If a mechanic in Lagos cannot get the part, the car does not sell — it sits. Japanese models win this category by a wide margin, and they win it locally rather than nationally: the workshop that knows a Corolla is usually within a few kilometres of the buyer.
  • Running cost per kilometre. Fuel and maintenance are a larger share of what a Nigerian owner pays per year than the purchase price. A 1.5-litre petrol sedan is a fundamentally different business from a 2.8-litre diesel pickup, and so is the buyer for each.
  • Resale, which is the same as parts availability read backwards. The model that sells fastest is usually the one a buyer will buy again in three years — and that buyer is looking for the same car you are looking for now.

There is a fourth factor that matters more in Nigeria than in most markets, and it is a tax band. Green Tax starts at 2,000cc, so the engines below that line land measurably cheaper. On a USD 23,800 FOB car, that band alone is worth more than a thousand dollars of tax — see what it really costs to import a car to Nigeria for the full arithmetic.

The ten

#ModelWhy it sellsBody
1Toyota CorollaParts on every street, the lowest running cost of anything on this list, and the deepest resale market in the country. Below 2,000cc, so it lands in the cheapest tax band.Sedan
2Toyota HiluxThe workhorse. Construction, agriculture, NGO and security fleets all buy it, and the diesel 4x4 double cab is the version that moves. Lands above 2,000cc, so budget the 2% Green Tax.Pickup
3Toyota CamryWhere the Corolla is the practical choice, the Camry is the executive one. Families and long-distance drivers buy it for the space and the ride, on an established parts network.Sedan
4Honda CivicThe strongest alternative to a Corolla, and the first choice for a commuter who wants more to drive. Check the exact year and specification, because equipment differs between markets.Sedan
5Nissan X-TrailA compact SUV that sits below the 2,000cc line in most trims, so it carries SUV space without carrying the SUV tax. Strong resale with families who want a higher driving position.SUV
6Toyota HiaceThe commercial transport staple: minibuses, church and school runs, corporate shuttles. The high-roof left-hand-drive version is the configuration that is asked for by name.Van
7Hyundai TucsonModern compact-SUV comfort at a price below the Japanese equivalents, with a parts network that is growing fast in Lagos. A common choice for a first SUV.SUV
8Toyota FortunerLand Cruiser capability without Land Cruiser money. Sits below the 4,000cc Green Tax band in most versions, which is why it beats a Prado on landed cost.SUV
9Toyota Land Cruiser PradoThe premium and fleet anchor: government procurement, oil and gas fleets, and buyers who want the badge. The highest landed cost on this list and the highest margin per unit.4x4 / Off-road
10Isuzu D-MaxThe value alternative to a Hilux. It does the same job for less, which is the argument for a buyer whose business depends on the vehicle rather than on the badge.Pickup

Where the money is, and where the risk is

Two of these three business models are in the list, and they are not the same business. The volume business is the Corolla and the Civic: low purchase price, low running cost, fast turnover, thin margin per unit. It scales with container loads. The margin business is the Prado, the Fortuner and the Hiace: fewer buyers, longer turnover, more per unit, and a working capital cycle that is longer. Mixing the two in one container without deciding which business you are running is how a shipment ends up half-sold at the wrong price.

The risk on this list is not demand. It is the two numbers that decide whether a specific unit is worth sending: age and engine size. The federal age ceiling is 12 years, but Apapa and Tin Can Island have been enforcing a 10-year limit in practice, and the 10-to-12-year band is where units get refused. Engine size decides your tax band. Both are checked before we quote, and we will tell you when a unit is close to the line rather than find out at the port.

What we can source, and what it costs landed

Everything on this list is something we source regularly, and the units in our own stock are the honest example. A 2021 Toyota Hilux 2.8D 4x4 double cab at USD 23,800 FOB lands in Lagos at about USD 38,083 — 1.6 times the FOB price, with taxes and levies taking 41.7 percent of the CIF value. A 2020 Toyota Corolla 1.6L at USD 9,800 lands at about 1.8 times, because a 1.6-litre engine is below the Green Tax threshold. A 2018 Land Cruiser Prado 2.7L at USD 16,900 lands at about 1.7 times.

The pattern in those three numbers is the argument for this list. The car that lands cheapest is not the cheapest car — it is the smallest engine, and the buyer who wants a Corolla will pay for a Corolla. We can send you what is in stock now, or start sourcing a model from this list that we do not currently hold.

What is the most popular used car to import into Nigeria?

The Toyota Corolla, by a wide margin. It has the deepest parts network in the country, the lowest running cost of the popular models, and the fastest resale. Most Nigerian used-car dealers run Corolla as their volume line because the buyer for a clean example is always there.

What is the best car to import to Nigeria for profit?

It depends on which business you are running. For volume, the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic: cheap to buy, cheap to run, fast to sell, and the engine sits below 2,000cc so it lands in the lowest tax band. For margin per unit, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Hiace. The mistake is mixing both in one container without deciding which one you are in.

Which car is cheapest to import to Nigeria after tax?

A small-displacement Toyota Corolla. Green Tax is charged from 2,000cc, so a 1.6-litre engine pays none of it, and the whole tax stack lands at roughly 39.7% of CIF. A 2020 Corolla at USD 9,800 FOB lands at about 1.5 times its FOB price, against 1.6 times for a 2.8-litre Hilux at the same price point.

Are Toyota or Honda better for the Nigerian market?

Toyota, for parts, and the gap is not small. Both brands have established workshop networks in Lagos, but the Corolla and Hilux have a deeper aftermarket than anything else on the road. The Honda Civic is the strongest alternative and holds its value well, but its parts network is a step behind, which matters more in Nigeria than in most markets.

What is the most demanded SUV in Nigeria?

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for the premium and fleet segment, where government procurement, oil and gas fleets and high-income buyers concentrate, and the Toyota Fortuner for buyers who want that capability at a lower price. The Fortuner is also usually the smarter landed-cost choice, because most versions sit below the 4,000cc Green Tax band that a Prado 4.0-litre falls into.

Do I need a 4x4 to import a car to Nigeria?

No, but it sells. Nigerian road conditions, especially outside the major cities, push buyers towards four-wheel drive, and the Toyota Hilux and Prado both sell fastest in 4x4 form. The Isuzu D-Max is the answer where a buyer wants that capability without the Toyota badge premium.

How many cars can I put in one container to Nigeria?

Roughly three to four sedans in a 40ft high-cube, or two to three pickups and SUVs depending on size. Consolidating is the single biggest lever on landed cost per unit, because freight and export handling are spread across every car in the box.

What is the resale value of a Toyota Corolla in Nigeria?

It is the reason the Corolla is first on this list. A clean, properly maintained Corolla consistently attracts buyers, and because the model is so common the market for it is liquid — you are not waiting months for the right buyer, which matters as much as the price you sell it for.

Which models should I avoid importing to Nigeria?

Not on demand grounds — the market is broad. Avoid on the two administrative grounds: anything right-hand-drive, which is refused outright with no conversion pathway, and anything near the age limit, because Nigeria has no over-age penalty band and an over-age car can be seized and auctioned. Also check the emission standard — Euro 4 or better is now required, and a Euro 3 unit fails clearance no matter how good it looks.

Send the models and quantities you are considering. We will come back with what is in stock, what we would source for you, and the landed cost to Lagos for each — so the number you plan around is the number the port will see.
